Duragym
DuraGym is an evidence-based exercise program designed to improve autonomy, mobility and independence for older adults. Led by kinesiologists and based on the validated Otago Exercise Program, DuraGym offers supervised, progressive training that targets strength, balance and functional mobility in a safe and welcoming environment.
Who We Serve
DuraGym is especially suited for older adults with reduced mobility, functional frailty or a recent decline in physical capacity who want to stay active and independent. The program supports people who wish to improve strength and balance, maintain independence at home and in the community, and reduce their risk of falls while feeling more confident in daily activities.

How the Program Works
The program runs in eight-week cycles, with supervised sessions twice per week. Each participant begins with an individual assessment of strength, balance, mobility, nutrition and cognition. Sessions focus on lower-limb strength, balance exercises, gait training, functional movements used in everyday life, and flexibility, always with close supervision and attention to safety.
After each exercise session, participants are invited to a social café setting where they can rest, have a protein shake, and connect with peers This social component is an integral part of DuraGym, helping to reduce isolation, build motivation and support overall well-being.
Benefits for participants
Many participants experience better balance, stronger legs, improved walking, and greater endurance in daily activities. They often report feeling more confident when moving around their home and community, less afraid of falling, and more motivated to stay active. The social café space after each session also gives participants a chance to build connections and support one another.
Our Duragym Vision
DuraGym is a key element of our efforts to promote autonomy, mobility and independence among older adults. As the program grows, our goal is to make this type of supervised, evidence-based training available to more older adults in both clinical and community settings, so that safe and effective exercise becomes a standard part of healthy aging care.
What Makes Duragym Unique?
DuraGym is led by kinesiologists with specific training in exercise for older adults and fall prevention. The program follows the validated Otago Exercise Program while adapting it to the needs of each participant. Small group sizes allow for close supervision and personal adjustment of exercises, while still offering the encouragement and community that come from training with others.
Clinical assessments are used at the beginning and end of each cycle, and often during the program, to monitor changes in strength, balance and functional mobility.
Duragym Launch 2025
On November 6, 2025, we were delighted to welcome Dr. Debra Waters, professor and researcher at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and the University of New Mexico, for a special event within our community: the opening of our DuraGyms.
The presentation began with Dr. Gustavo Duque, who gave a short talk about the DuraGyms. Afterwards, Dr. Waters presented how tailored interventions can support mobility, autonomy, and quality of life, particularly among vulnerable communities in New Zealand and New Mexico.
