Internships and research visits at Schouela CEDurable

Learning through practical work

Jonathan David Bensimon put his kinesiology training at McGill University into practice during an internship in DURAgym. As a final-year student working under Hussein Samhat, he gained experience in functional assessment, exercise prescription for older adults living with frailty, and safe supervision in a clinical exercise setting. The placement helped him develop practical geriatric skills that he hoped to carry into a future in medicine.

Paul Yazbeck, a third-year undergraduate in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University, joined for a research internship under Gustavo Duque and Mahdi Imani, PhD. His assignment in INSPIRE-T was to prepare labelled reference images for training and validating deep-learning models designed to measure fat within muscles and bone marrow. The study uses Dixon MRI images from a patient cohort in Toulouse, France.

Bringing clinical and teaching experience into research

Cristiano Gomes brought experience teaching orthopaedics and gerontology and studying physical function in later life. A physiotherapist, professor and researcher from the University of Pernambuco’s Petrolina campus in Brazil, he joined Schouela CEDurable for a research internship under Gustavo Duque and Hussein Samhat. His internship was intended to support work in DURAgym and THRIVE, drawing on his research interests in mobility and frailty.

Dr. Do Kyung Lee, MD, PhD, joined as a Visiting Research Fellow to pursue research on muscle and musculoskeletal ageing under Gustavo Duque. He came from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Samsung Changwon Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Korea, where he was an Associate Professor. His research interests included a practical question from knee surgery: how the condition of the quadriceps muscle relates to function before and after an operation.

Sharing knowledge during a research stay

Iván Baltasar Fernández, PhD, completed a four-month research stay at Schouela CEDurable. During his time in Montréal, he contributed to THRIVE and DURAgym and exchanged knowledge with the Centre’s researchers.
